President Jiang Zemin Met with Indonesian President (19/10/2001)

On October 19, President Jiang Zemin met with Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri in Shanghai.

Jiang welcomed Megawati to China for the APEC meeting.

Megawati expressed gladness to attend the APEC meeting for the first time. She said that she has expected for a long time to visit China, since the two countries have established a good relationship. She also expressed the hope that bilateral ties between Indonesia and China will further develop.

Jiang said Megawati reminded him of her father Sukarno, who was one of the founders of friendly relations between the two countries.

Jiang expressed confidence that friendly cooperation between the two countries will achieve greater progress during Megawati's term of office.

As two friendly neighbors, Jiang said, China will as always support Indonesian government's efforts to safeguard Indonesia’s territorial integrity, national unity and harmony among all its ethic groups.

Jiang said he was happy to see that situation in Indonesia has turned stable recently and that the Indonesian economy is recovering gradually.

President Jiang recalled his participation in the APEC meeting held in Indonesia in 1994.

Jiang invited Megawati to visit China next year at her convenience, and Megawati accepted Jiang 's invitation with pleasure.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the anti-terrorism issue, maintenance of regional peace and peace in the world, and other issues.
